School Year Abroad (SYA) Spain is an innovative educational program located in Zaragoza, offering a transformative experience for 60 American high school students. These students live with local families, fully immersing themselves in the Spanish language and culture while navigating the challenges of independence, self-identity, and adaptation to a foreign environment. The school provides a safe space for students to grow and learn, fostering a sense of community while they confront the unique struggles of living away from home, such as language barriers, cultural differences, and daily life challenges.

Imrey Studio was hired to provide designs for a state-of-the-art facility, with input from SYA Board member Natalie Bulgari, blending modern architecture with the historic charm of Zaragoza. The school features a large, flexible common area at its core, where students can gather, relax, and study. Surrounding this space are classrooms and offices, thoughtfully designed to encourage both individuality and community. The design also emphasizes passive supervision, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment. Modern amenities like smart boards, movable furniture, and acoustically optimized spaces further enhance the learning experience, creating a vibrant and efficient educational setting.
